Job Purpose and Impact

The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist will lead the implementation, execution and maintenance of the environmental, health and safety and process safety management systems at two medium complex food production facilities. In this role, you will serve as a subject matter expert to ensure the plants are safe and compliant with all relevant Health, Safety and Environmental Legislation,  as well as company policies. 

The role covers two manufacturing sites: York, focused on cocoa production and processing, and Worksop, dedicated to bulk chocolate manufacturing.


The position is site-based and requires full-time presence at the plants, five days per week.

Key Accountabilities

  • Support the plant manager and site teams in providing expert guidance in all areas of Health, Safety and Environmental compliance.
  • Support in contractor management to ensure legal requirements are adhered to at all times.
  • Build and develop relationships with the wider EHS support across the UK and EMEA.
  • Support EHS training requirements for the site teams including developing courses and external specialists as required.
  • Partner with key site or project leaders to integrate and operationalize environmental, health and safety programs and drive culture of safety, compliance and continuous improvement.
  • Understand, localize and integrate legal and company required work processes, programs and controls into site level operating procedures, tools and work instructions to standardize front line processes and monitor, analyze and adjust for improved performance.
  • Ensure strong alignment of goals, metrics and targets site leadership teams and monitor performances against objectives.  
  • Lead incident investigations and ensure timely reporting to all interested parties.
  • Independently solve moderately complex issues with minimal supervision, while escalating more complex issues to appropriate staff.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience in a similar position, preferably in food manufacturing / food factory experience
  • Chartered IOSH member or be working towards.
  • Relevant NEBOSH qualification
  • Experience with maintaining and implementing ISO14001 & ISO45001 Management Systems including managing external Surveillance Audits  
  • Capable of working across multiple sites (York and Worksop)
  • Practical, hands-on approach
  • Strong team player and ability to build and maintain relationships
  • Be flexible and self-motivated
  • Environmental competence e.g. ISEP Qualification & Membership 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • Confirmed ability to deliver processes effectively to optimize business resources
  • Full clean UK driving licence
  • Solid working knowledge of food safety industry practices and standards
  • Basic business acumen and the ability to partner and communicate effectively with business counterparts
